About field operational testing Testing new transport technologiesField operational testing is widely recognised as an effective instrument to test new transport technologies in the real world. Previous experience in Europe, US, and Japan has shown that field trials are an excellent way to raise awareness, collect real data, and enhance the take-up of ICT solutions. Field Operational Tests have also proved to be a powerful tool for gaining insight into the way new functions and systems suit the user when operated in the real context, and for a sufficient long time to have statistically sound data.
In Europe, such testing has traditionally been carried out at national level, but there is now a growing need to incorporate these tests into a common European framework. The challenge is to promote the use of a common methodology for such testing, so that the results can be shared and compared at both European and national level. FOT-Net- Networking for Field Operational Tests
The European approach to field operational testing has been developed in 2008 in the FESTA project. The project has produced a comprehensive manual which guides you through all the steps you need to take when implemeting a Field Operational Test. This is the approach being applied in euroFOT.
In order to learn about and apply this methodology on Field testings, National, European and international Field Operational Test organisers are now gathered in one strategic networking platform: FOT-Net. FOT-Net is the point of reference for anyone interested in Field Operational Tests, their organisation their set up and their results. FOT-Net is open to all stakeholders from public and private sectors willing to exchange experiences and benefit from each others’ learning experiences
For more information about field operational tests in general, the FOT-net project is developing an inventory of FOTs across Europe and beyond.
